Chen Chengxin, who is over sixty years old, is from Xincun, Baishi Street. For more than 20 years, Chen Chengxin has been committed to charity, helping the poor, teaching and aiding students, building bridges and paving roads. As the vice president of the Yueqing Poverty Alleviation Federation, he has donated a total of more than 32 million yuan.

When we first met Chen Chengxin, he was in a suit and leather shoes, full of energy, and he didn't drink or smoke. He didn't look like a businessman to others, but he owned the Jinding Hotel and many industries in Lianyungang and Yueqing.

Be like father and son to the recipient of the funding

In 1993, Chen Chengxin came into contact with charity for the first time. Chen Chengxin donated 110,000 yuan to the expansion fee of the then Baishi No. 3 Primary School, and later won the Zhejiang Provincial People's Government's "Thousand-year Donation Award for Education." Since 2009, Chen Chengxin has donated 200,000 yuan every year to build the "Chengxin Building" and add teaching equipment to Zhongyan School in Yueqing City. By 2011, he had donated 600,000 yuan, and his deeds were recorded in the "Zhongyandang Mountain Chronicles".

Over the years, Chen Chengxin has paired up with more than 30 college students and funded more than 200,000 yuan each year to help them complete their studies. The children who have been sponsored by Chen Chengxin affectionately call him "Uncle Chen." Ten years ago, Chen Chengxin paired up with Li Chong, a boy from Shanxi, and helped him successfully complete four years of college. Li Chong's father suffered from cancer. In order to treat the disease, his mother sold her only house. However, Li Chong received an admission notice from the Beijing Film Academy shortly after his father's death. The first-year tuition fee was nearly 40,000 yuan. Li Chong, who had basically no living expenses, worked part-time while studying. Later, his teachers and classmates found out. A Yueqing student in the same class introduced Li Chong to him because his father knew Chen Chengxin.

After learning about Li Chong's situation, Chen Chengxin began to fund his annual tuition of 30,000 yuan. Now, Li Chong has graduated early and is staying in Beijing to develop his career. He often calls to chat with "Uncle Chen" and reminisce about old times. Chen Chengxin would meet with him every time he went to Beijing on business to talk about the current situation. Although the two are far apart, they share the same affection as father and son.

Doing charity is like running a business

During the Yangtze River floods in 1998, Chen Chengxin generously donated funds. In 2000, Chen Chengxin donated 1.3 million yuan to build a standard seawall of more than 500 meters to protect the people in Panshi, Yueqing from the waves.

In the summer of 2005, Yueqing was hit hard by Typhoon Maisha and many places were flooded. Chen Chengxin donated nearly 800,000 yuan to the reconstruction of the disaster area. Traffic in Xianxi Town was blocked due to the disaster. He invested 250,000 yuan to build a "Lesi Bridge" to facilitate people's passage. Today, there are "Chengxin Teaching Building", "Lesi Bridge" and "Lesi Pavilion" built in many places in Yueqing.

When asked about the reasons for joining charity, Chen Chengxin said that in his opinion, a company needs the support of people and society to be able to stand on its own, and doing good deeds is the best feedback to people and society. When asked whether he would insist on continuing his charity work, Chen Chengxin gave a firm reply: "Charity is actually the same as running a hotel or a business. We have the ability, so why not treat others well?"
